Now I'm a Cowboy

Singer/guitarist Luke Haines pens literate, gently mocking portraits of British bohemia, always tuneful and mostly mid-tempo. But the guitars crash on this album's opener, "Lenny Valentino," and again on the delightful "New French Girlfriend," while the conclusion of "Modern History" is practically a rave-up. The contrast between these tracks and such quieter ones as "Brainchild" and "Chinese Bakery" is a little jrring stylistically. Song for song, though, this is one of the strongest collections of smart pop since the Auteurs' last album.
